After less than 5 months, I feel like I’ve already read Goodnight Moon a million times. If you can recite the story of the great green room from memory, here’s a new poem for you that I found, thanks to Parenting Magazine:

Goodnight Mom

In the messy green
family room
There was a telemarketer ringing the telephone
And a crying toddler
because his brother just popped his
red balloon
And a picture of–

The cow jumping over the moon (which someone colored on with permanent marker)
And there was a missing
teddy bear, and a girl with
gum in her hair

And one to be scolded
And laundry to be folded
And a very hungry spouse
And something stinky in the house
(that no one else seemed to smell)

And a comb and a brush and a colicky baby who just won’t shush
And a frazzled mommy screaming #*%#@

Goodnight messy room
Goodnight scribbled-on moon
Goodnight cow getting out while she can
Goodnight telemarketers and the
popped balloon
Goodnight long-gone teddy bear Goodnight cereal bar smeared all
over the dining room chair

Goodnight spitup
And goodnight leaky sippy cup
Goodnight much-too-little house and goodnight grumpy spouse
Goodnight comb and goodnight brush
And goodnight to a certain 4-year-old who just needs to hush right now I mean it

Goodnight Elmo
Goodnight toys we’ll pick up tomorrow,
or the next day
Hello chardonnay and TiVo–
“me” time finally

With the movie version of “Where the Wild Things Are” coming out today, I started thinking that Max would be a great Halloween costume. Actually, I thought this when I put Finn’s Halloween costume on today and noticed that he’s had a growth spurt. So I started searching around for one. I mean, Hollywood blockbuster means all sorts of product tie-ins, right? Collectibles at your favorite fast food joint, terribly scary Wild Thing costumes lining the aisle of the stores….

Nothing.

In fact, the only Max costumes I could find online are homemade - and will run you $150 a pop. Not a great idea for a kid who doesn’t eat solid foods yet. But after finding this picture, I’m sure I can arts-&-crafts together something:

Happy Halloween to all the Wild Things. Let the wild rumpus start!

I’m sure you have asked this question: “Where can I get a great chicken salad sandwich?” No? Well, even if you haven’t, let me tell you where I found the best chicken salad sandwich - the Ruebel Hotel in Grafton, IL. Now you are probably saying that you are not driving all the way to Grafton for a chicken salad sandwich. Fine. You’ll miss quite an expereince then. The Ruebel was built in the late 1800s, and it’s going through a new renovation that’s making it look amazing. Flat screens around the bar, new furniture, and an impressive wine and food list too. And that’s just the dining room! You can see more at http://www.ruebelhotel.com/ and judge for yourself. So, the next time you venture to Grafton check out the Ruebel and order the chicken salad sandwich - it will bring you back!

I just want to share a great experience that my daughter, Kennedy, has had this summer. It’s a half day Discovery Camp at The Nature Institute in Godfrey. The program was about $100, which includes a shirt and other activity prizes, and Kennedy has loved it! Way cool for a 3-year-old - especially one with cochlear implants. In fact, she even was awarded a special lantern for being so helpful with some of the other campers. She’s had themed “adventure” days like “Buffalo and the Prairie”, “No Alligators Here”, and “Safari”. And tomorrow, my wife Sara and I get to join her for a “Bush Bash” and lunch. There are different camps for different age groups throughout the summer. You can find out more by going to http://www.thenatureinstitute.org/ Anyway, I just wanted to let you know about a summer activity that is fun and educational that’s just about a half hour from St. Louis.

It’s getting closer and closer to $3 a gallon, but the price of a barrel is now where near the price it was when we were paying $4 a gallon. This is ridiculous. Mark my words, when the economy spirals downward again…unfortunately sooner than later now…These high gas prices will be the straw that broke the camel’s back. I just wish there was more that I could do than limitting my errands and the like. I’m finding out more and more that “Wall Street’s” Gordon Gecko was way wrong. “Greed” is not good. It’s going to devour us all if we are not careful.

As a relatively new dad myself (Kennedy is a little over 3 now) I can tell you that the one thing that they need now is SLEEP! Get it now because as they get older, they don’t wnat to! Grandparents are an invalueable asset too. Anyway, I can’t wait to see the little guy, and I hope Jen gets plenty of rest on her maternity leave - she’s going to need it!

So we got on a subject today about “the dumb stuff you did as a kid that you don’t want your child doing.” I was a pretty good kid. I didn’t smoke, do drugs, or even drink illegally. I thank my parents and my friends love and understanding for that; however, I still did dumb stuff. One dumb thing that comes to mind can be summed up in three simple words: “Bottle Rocket Fight”. Why would I even think that shooting firecrackers at my friends couldn’t cause any serious harm? It’s only a small explosive for Pete’s sake! I even remember sawing a wiffleball bat in half to make the perfect launcher. My friends and I planned for weeks about who would be on who’s “army”, where the battle would take place, and what clothing would provide the best protection. It was going to great! Well, the battle lasted about ten minutes, before someone got injured. Weeks of planning ended because a “whistling chaser” caught a kid in the shoulder. Unfortunately, I was that kid. The mark eventually went away, but the pain of my stupidity lingers on. I only hope that my daughter is wiser for it.

I got hooked the other day on the Sci Fi Channel and their “Land of the Lost” marathon. How did I ever think this show was amazing? Well granted, I was like 5 or 6 yrs old so my “taste barometer” wasn’t on full tilt yet but seriously?!? As I watched episode after episode I realized a few things like, I’ll never get these hours back and,

Chaka was scarier than the Sleestacks. I’m not sure why I thought they were so scary but just watching them walking around in their slow pace in need of an inhaler was quite comical. Plus, all you had to do was wave fire in their face and they’d back off. Probably because that sparkly disco outfit would go up in flames.

Who braided Holly’s hair everyday and why did it never get any longer?

The opening theme of the show is the greatest in bad special effects. If you haven’t watched it in awhile, do it today.

I didn’t recall the dad being sucked out of some time hole and then conveniently, Uncle Jack showed up on his little yellow raft. I think I must have only watched the first season because this whole story line escapes me.

Despite all my laughing at the bad of the show it did make me realize one thing about the shows from my past…imagination. From Shazaam to Sigmund and the SeaMonster, they were all fantasy. You’ll grow up soon enough so when you’re young why not escape a little bit into a completely unrealistic world. Although that still doesn’t explain my obsession with the British Women’s Prison show, “Prisoner Cell Block H”. That’s another topic for another day, maybe.

The lifeguard even offered extra instructions on ways not to injure yourself - not that you’ll really hurt yourself, but you could get a few bumps and bruises. The ride itself lasts about ten seconds, and you can go airborne a little, at speeds of 35 mph. It’s definitely worth checking out for yourself if you’re a fan of water slides. I enjoyed my ride, and I did not get sick like on previous “testing” ride occasions. In short, just another fun reason to enjoy a day at the Flags!
